During a trip to the Middle East recently, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin reiterated the idea of a “two-state solution” as “the only path toward peace” even as the war in Gaza continues. Yet an independent Palestinian state established alongside the existing one of Israel, west of the Jordan River—giving both peoples their own territory—is presently contested by the Israelis.
