Ailing Pope to Travel to Dubai for Climate Conference — By: Church Militant

VATICAN (ChurchMilitant.com) – Pope Francis is reaffirming his commitment to travel to the United Arab Emirates this week to speak at the U.N. climate conference.

Pope Francis revealed on Sunday that he plans to travel to Dubai for COP28, despite his current infirmity, which he described as “inflammation of the lungs.”

In his Angelus address read by Msgr. Paolo Braida, Pope Francis declared, “Besides war, our world is threatened by another great danger, that of the climate, which puts life on Earth, especially for the future generations, at risk. And this is contrary to the plan of God, who created everything for life.”

He continued, “Therefore, next weekend, I will go to the United Arab Emirates to speak on Saturday at the COP28 in Dubai. I thank everyone who will accompany this journey with prayer and with the commitment to take to heart the preservation of the common home.”

Pope Francis is set to arrive at the event on Friday and will become the first pope to attend a COP conference. COP28 is the term used for the 28th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This year’s gathering of an expected 70,000+ delegates takes place in Dubai from Nov. 30 through Dec. 12.

According to the UNFCCC’s website, “To put it simply, the COP is where the world comes together to agree on ways to address the climate crisis, such as limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, helping vulnerable communities adapt to the effects of climate change, and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.”

At COP28, the first “global stocktake” will conclude. “The global stocktake is a process for countries and stakeholders to see where they’re collectively making progress towards meeting the goals of the Paris Climate Change Agreement — and where they’re not,” the U.N. explained. “The global stocktake has showed us we are not on track to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The window for meaningful change is closing, and the time to act is now.”
